本变种与粗榧的主要区别在于小枝粗壮，叶较宽厚（宽达5-6毫米），先端常急尖，叶干后边缘向下反曲。上述各点，除叶端急尖与日本粗榧C. drupacea Sieb. et Zucc.相似外，其他各点均不相同。
产于四川东部（南川、巫溪、奉节）、湖北西部（恩施、合丰）、贵州东南部（凯里、雷公山）、广西东北部（光安）、广东北部（乳源）及福建北部（崇安）等地，生于海拔900-1900米地带。用途与粗榧相同。模式标本采自四川南川金佛山。
